Sohar Fertilizer Project Commences Urea Production

Sohar International Urea & Chemical Industries SAOC (SIUCI) has achieved yet another milestone with the commencement of trial production of granular urea from its Sohar Fertiliser Project. The mega fertiliser project, conceived and promoted by Sheikh Suhail Salim Bahwan, has been constructed without any change orders and within the original budgeted cost. With a production capacity of over 1.2 million tonnes per annum of granular urea, the fertilizer project is one of the largest industrial investments by an individual within the GCC countries.

The Project has been constructed on lump-sum-turn-key basis by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Fertiliser Project Contracting and Construction Co. LLC (MHIFPCC), a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), Japan, one of the largest engineering companies in the world and a leading EPC Contractor for fertilizer projects.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Suresh M. Shivdasani, Managing Director of SIUCI stated that SIUCI’s technical team comprises over 180 qualified O&M personnel from the global fertilizer industry with average 15 to 20 years experience in various fertilizer companies. In addition to Omani nationals working in non-technical areas, nearly 70 Omani nationals have been inducted since 2006 as technical trainees and provided two years extensive training at Muscat and Sohar, which included classroom, workshop and on-the-job training. Each trainee is then attached to a mentor, who closely evaluates the individual training requirements and provides the necessary guidance.

Mr. Masayoshi Yano, the Project Director of MHI said “the Sohar Fertiliser Project is one of the largest ammonia/urea projects in the world, which uses best quality equipments from Japan and Europe, state-of-the-art instrumentation and control technology as well as advanced pollution control and environmental monitoring system. MHI is fully committed to the success of the Project and will provide all technical support required during the life of the Project.”

Sheikh Suhail Salim Bahwan, Chairman, SIUCI, stated that the Project is a symbol of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said’s inspiring leadership and vision, which has created an excellent environment for the successful industrial, economic and technical development in the country. Sheikh Suhail also expressed his deep gratitude to the Ministry of National Economy, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Ministry of Oil and Gas, Ministry of Transport and Communications, Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, Ministry of Manpower, Sohar Industrial Port Company, Oman Gas Company and Majis Industrial Services SAOC for their guidance and cooperation which has enabled the realization of the Project.
